Abstract:

The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance has necessitated the search for alternative and natural sources of antimicrobial agents. Medicinal plants have gained considerable attention due to their availability, affordability, and reduced side effects compared to synthetic drugs. This seminar focuses on the evaluation of the antimicrobial potential of Citrus aurantiifolia (lime) and Allium cepa (onion) against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Lime and onion are widely used in traditional medicine and are known to possess bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolics, alkaloids, and sulfur-containing compounds, which contribute to their antimicrobial properties. The antimicrobial activity of their extracts is commonly assessed using standard microbiological techniques, including agar well diffusion and determination of zones of inhibition. Findings from existing studies indicate that both lime and onion extracts exhibit inhibitory effects against various pathogenic microorganisms, although the degree of activity varies depending on the organism and concentration of the extract. This study highlights the relevance of lime and onion as potential sources of natural antimicrobial agents and supports their possible application in managing microbial infections and combating antibiotic resistance.
